Story and Background

As its name suggests, Mass Effect Andromeda takes place in the galaxy of Andromeda, located 2,5 million light-years from the Earth. Specifically, in the Heleus Cluster. 

It’s 2185, just in the middle of the events of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. Quarians and the four Citadel Council races have decided to inhabit new worlds of the Andromeda Galaxy. This plan is known as the Andromeda Initiative.

Each race sends 20,000 citizens on a 600-year journey in a sleeper ship called the Ark. When you wake up, it is the year 2819, and you already are in the Heleus Cluster. Now your mission is to collaborate with the crew and Pathfinders to bring the mission to fruition. 

But, don’t rest on your laurels, as you’ll visit a hostile territory. Many races of the new galaxy will see your ship as an enemy. The plan is to face them with military-trained explorers or gain their sympathy.

Gameplay and Mechanics

At the beginning of the game, you must choose between Sara or Scott Ryder, twins whose father is Alec Ryder, the Pathfinder of humans. 

Unlike the previous Mass Effect games, in Andromeda, you can freely assign any skill you want to your character and build towards it over the course of the game. 

To develop and unlock these skills, you can earn experience points by completing missions. The number of points you can earn through this method is limitless. When you gain enough EP, your character levels up. 

You can relocate points you assigned to each skill. This way, it’s possible to experiment with different combinations without having to restart your game.  

Your Ryder can also interact with NPCs through four types of responses: logical, emotional, professional, and casual. You can also develop friendships, even romantic ones.

Talking about navigation, you must select destinations when you’re inside the “Tempest.” There are five main planets and more than a dozen of hub worlds that you can visit to explore and complete quests. 

To cross primary planets, you use the “Nomad,” a six-wheeled all-terrain vehicle. While you drive it, you can scan the surface of the planet to get resources. Some planets have environmental hazards which you have to avoid.

Combat is in real-time. You can move your character freely, side-to-side or vertical using a jetpack. You damage enemies using gunfire, specialized skills, or melee attacks. 

Multiplayer

Playing with other players, you must survive several waves of enemies while completing a series of objectives. You can choose between different races, allocate skill points and the weapons you use.
